Circle of the Master of Liesborn: 'Saint Margaret'
This painting is part of the group: Fragments from an Altarpiece of the Virgin and Saints

Explore the paintings

Both this picture and 'Saint Dorothy' are fragments of a larger work, probably showing the Virgin and Child seated in a garden with Saints Dorothy, Margaret, Catherine and Agnes. They come from a chapel in Lippstadt, Westphalia.

Saint Margaret is wearing a head-dress of pearls. She carries a cross and holds a chain which secures a dragon upon which she rests. According to one of the various legends about the saint she overcame this creature by making the sign of the cross.
