This painting is the left hand shutter from the Crucifixion triptych. It shows the donor who commissioned the work as if he were witnessing the Crucifixion - the subject of the central panel. His wife is painted opposite on the right hand panel.
His unidentified coat of arms is painted on the 'prie-dieu' (the prayer desk he is kneeling in front of) and has the letters 'WB' painted above it. In the background, is a scene of the Way to Calvary.
