The subject of this painting is taken from Torquato Tasso's epic poem 'Gerusalemme Liberata' (7: 6 ff). Erminia, dressed in armour, has fled from Jerusalem and encounters a shepherd, who offers her shelter. The painting is probably by one of the many pupils trained under Annibale Carracci. It has recently been attributed to Francesco Albani.
