This painting is part of the group: Portraits of a Man and a Woman
This portrait is most probably a companion piece to 'Portrait of a Man aged about 45'. The 'Portrait of a Man' was once thought to be a portrait of Sir William Boxall, RA (1800 - 1879), Director of the Gallery. It is now thought more probably to be an early portrait by Boxall himself of his father. The pendant 'Portrait of a Woman' is probably of his mother.
