Berthe Morisot: 'Girl on a Divan'
On loan from Tate: Bequeathed by the Hon. Mrs A. E. Pleydell-Bouverie through the Friends of the Tate Gallery 1968, © 2000 Tate

Morisot was always remarkably free in her distinctive handling of paint, the canvas animated here by vivid, quick touches of colour.

The sitter was probably a paid model, but her frank and direct gaze suggests a friendship between sitter and artist. Morisot's daughter later dated this work to 1885.
