On the left Saint John the Baptist and Saint Zenobius are shown standing near the kneeling Saint Jerome. On the right stand Saint Peter and Saint Dominic while the kneeling figure is Saint Francis.
Benozzo Gozzoli was contracted to paint this picture on 23 October 1461 for the confraternity of the Compagnia di Santa Maria della Purificazione e di San Zanobi, Florence, also known as the Compagnia di San Marco because it was attached to the Dominican convent there. All five predella panels survive (London, Royal Collection; Milan, Brera; Berlin, Gemäldegalerie; Washington, Kress collection and Philadelphia, J.G. Johnson collection).
