Room A: Paintings after 1600

Nothing is known of the identity of this elegantly dressed sitter.

Van der Helst was one of the most successful portrait painters in Amsterdam from the mid-1640s onwards. His Flemish-influenced style and careful depiction of fabrics brought him many commissions for single and family portraits, as well as for guild and militia group portraits.
