The Virgin and Child are shown in front of a classical building. Further to the left is a female saint and Saint George with the princess he saved from the dragon. On the right the infant John the Baptist with two angels pulls a lamb towards the sleeping Christ Child. In the landscape behind this group Saint Joseph sleeps.
The composition is based on a painting by the Rubens (Madrid, Prado) that probably dates from the period 1630-5, and a woodcut after that picture, produced under Rubens's supervision, which excludes the saints. The painting may also have been made in Rubens's studio.
