The Virgin and Child are shown in front of a classical building. Further to the left is a female saint and Saint George with the princess he saved from the dragon. On the right the infant John the Baptist with two angels pulls a lamb towards the sleeping Christ Child. In the landscape behind this group Saint Joseph sleeps.
The composition is based on a painting by Rubens of the Rest on the Flight into Egypt (Madrid, Prado) that probably dates to about 1635, and a woodcut after that picture, produced under Rubens's supervision, which excludes the saints. This painting may also have been made in Rubens's studio.
