This scene, which is described in all four Gospels, shows Christ being baptised by John the Baptist in the River Jordan. The picture is a copy after an altarpiece predella panel by Perugino painted for the Benedictine Abbey of San Pietro in Perugia, Italy (now in Rouen, Musée des Beaux-Arts).
Previously dismissed as a 19th-century copy, recent research suggests the painting might be by Sassoferrato, who painted several copies of works by Perugino.
