Jesus is shown praying in the Garden of Gethsemane as an angel reveals a chalice to him, foreshadowing his suffering and Crucifixion. The reverse has the remains of dark paint and a simple pattern, perhaps of a later date.
A companion panel to this work shows 'Christ carrying the Cross' (Duke of Sutherland collection). It has a similar painted border to the 'Christ at Gethsemane', and is said to have been in the Medici-Riccardi Palace, Florence.
