A story from the New Testament (John 20: 14-18) tells how Mary Magdalene at first mistook the Risen Christ for a gardener: he is shown holding a hoe. She kneels before him and Christ urges her not to touch him, saying 'Noli me tangere'.
This is a pinnacle panel from an altarpiece by a Florentine master in the 1370s, named after another pinnacle from the same altarpiece in the Lehman Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The artist's style is close to that of Jacopo di Cione.
It has been suggested that the painter may be the Camaldolese monk, Don Silvestro dei Gherarducci.
