This episode is taken from the Old Testament (Exodus 2: 5). Moses is discovered after being hidden in the bulrushes by the River Nile to save him from Pharaoh's decree that all Hebrew boys be killed.
The composition seems to derive from Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's treatment of the same scene (Edinburgh, National Gallery of Scotland), and the influence of Paolo Veronese is also evident.
