Andrea Previtali: 'The Virgin and Child with a Supplicant'

Explore the paintings

The Virgin and Child are shown in the foreground with a donor, probably a Franciscan friar, praying on the left. Christ holds a flower and gives a sign of blessing. The donor is tonsured and raises his hands in veneration. Saint Catherine of Alexandria stands amid ruins in the right background with the wheel of her martyrdom.

The gesture of the Virgin touching the donor's head was probably invented by Giovanni Bellini.
