André Bouys: 'La Barre and Other Musicians'

Explore the paintings

Michel de La Barre was a flautist and composer. He was born in Paris about 1674, and died there in 1743 or 1744. He would seem to be the man standing turning the music, which is copied from 'Troisième livre de trois, pour les violons, flutes et hautbois, mêlés de sonates pour la flute traversière' (Paris 1707).

The man on the right, whose costume is richer, may have commissioned the portrait as a record of his association with the musicians. The costume accords with a date of about 1710.
