Altobello Melone: 'The Road to Emmaus'

Christ is shown as a pilgrim with hat, staff and shell. In the background he appears again, this time between disciples, approaching the village of Emmaus. The subject is taken from the New Testament (Luke 24: 13-35), which recounts how on the day after Christ's tomb had been found empty, he apeared to two disciples who are unaware of his identity until he dines with them in Emmaus, when he breaks the bread as he had at the Last Supper.
