This view has been identified as the coast near Palavas-les-Flots, near Montpellier. Courbet is known to have been in the Montpellier district in 1854, 1857 and 1858. Despite being similar to Courbet's own paintings of the area, it is nevertheless thought that this work was painted by another hand.
