Aert van der Neer: 'An Evening Landscape with a Horse and Cart by a Stream'

Explore the paintings

One horse and cart seems to have just crossed a stream; another is following behind.

Van der Neer, the father of the painter Eglon van der Neer, whose painting 'Judith' is also in the National Gallery's Collection, moved from Gornichem to Amsterdam around 1632. He specialised in landscapes, which normally recede deeply into the picture, in the twilight of dawn or dusk, or illuminated by the moonlight or fire.
