Cuyp is best known for his luminous Italianate landscapes, but he was also a gifted painter of animals. According to the inscription in the upper left of the painting, the duck Sijctghen, well-loved and a prolific layer, was twenty years old in 1647 when Cuyp painted her. A second inscription records Sijctghen’s death three years later.
