Adriaen van Ostade: 'A Peasant holding a Jug and a Pipe'

Explore the paintings

Van Ostade painted a number of individual half-length studies of peasants: this man clasps a stoneware jug and a clay pipe.

Adriaen van Ostade was born and worked in Haarlem. He was a pupil of Frans Hals at the same time as Adriaen Brouwer, who is famous for this tavern and peasant scenes and who influenced van Ostade. Van Ostade painted and etched peasant scenes; he also painted a few biblical subjects and small portraits.
