The elevated viewpoint and low horizon give the viewer the impression of a vast landscape. The eye is guided along the winding river towards the farm in the middle distance. The dramatic cloud formation emphasises the further deep recession of the space beyond the farm building and screen of the trees on the right. Typically for Van de Velde, the imaginary scene (this is not an identifiable site) is dotted with small figures and animals. This work is one of a group of paintings of similar style and composition painted by the artist during the period of 1658-61. There is a known preparatory drawing for the cow (Amsterdam Museum).
