Sound

The National Gallery is collaborating with Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication on 'Transcriptions: Sound’, an innovative new project which involves third-year sound design students producing a three-minute response to a painting of their choice in the Gallery's collection.

From the sound artist:

Rousseau depicts a tiger in the rainforest caught in a storm. I was struck by the intensity of the storm and the denseness of the forest.

I convey this intensity by building up the sounds of a storm as if you were standing exactly where the tiger is in the picture. The density of the rainforest gave me a feeling of claustrophobia so I decided to make it sound as if you are listening to the rain from inside somewhere. And when the storm arrives, I put the wind, thunder and rain into the middle of the mix to again convey this sense of enclosure and fear.

To convey the ferocity of the tiger, I imagined a fight between the animal and the elements. I mixed the roars of a tiger with the thunder, as if one was trying to cancel the other out, as if they were locked in battle.
