From the sound artist:
Van Gogh made this painting while he was a patient in St-Rémy mental asylum, near Arles. My impression is that he started by creating a beautiful, still landscape, but as his illness progressed the mood turned stormy. There is a sense of confusion: the wheat moves in all directions and the clouds are distorted. They hide the sun and it is becoming cold and windy. The dark cypress trees have the shape of fire - for me, this is the only warm aspect of the painting.
