From the sound artist:
A packet boat full of passengers is arriving at Calais. The Passengers will eventually reach the pier safely, but Turner chooses to depict the moment when, as they near their destination, they encounter a heavy swell and storm clouds. A strong wind blows from the left.
Turner represents human fear in this painting and I wanted to work with this idea in my sound response. A light soulful wind and rain can be heard at the beginning of the piece, which expresses the passengers’ fear of death as they foresee the imminent danger. This is confirmed by the distant sound of thunder.
