From the sound artist:
My sound piece is an attempt to recreate aurally the many activities portrayed in Rosa’s painting as well as capturing the painter’s view of the occult world of witchcraft in 17th-century Italy.
There is so much going on in the painting, so much detail, it is almost possible to hear it: the witches casting spells and making potions; the mutterings of the evil creatures; a tree creaking with the dead weight of a hanging man; curious whispers; fire; and the weather closing in.
The piece starts by placing the listener in that environment and then introduces the poem ‘La Strega’ (The Witch), written by the painter. The poem was an inspiration when collecting sounds.
