From the film-maker:
Impressionist painting has always interested me, especially the works of Degas. His dramatic use of colour is both inspiring and captivating. The bold and emotional use of red is what originally drew me to this piece. What I noticed on closer inspection is what firmly decided my term choice.
For most women, brushing a daughter’s hair is a pleasant task. The drawn and careworn facial expressions represented in this painting contradict this assumption. My goal with this film is to show the strength of a mother and daughter dealing with the last day and night of a girl living her everyday life. The loss of her hair is the loss of innocence. Parents shouldn’t witness their child withering away, especially in such a painful manner. Personally knowing individuals who have had to deal with this dreadful situation made me determined to show this tragedy, a way to pay homage for their losses.
