From the film-maker:

The National Gallery is a mass of inspiration. The use of light and the setting of this picture inspired me to mix genres and styles, which gave the film a film noir/fantasy feel with a hint of realism and with a slight classical 1940s Hollywood edge to it. I was inspired specifically by the dark, complex themes and subject matter of the painting. Betrayal, mercy, guilt, love, judgement, salvation and redemption all feature heavily in the painting in a number of different ways and these emotions inspired me to create the film's characters and story.
