From the film-maker:
The paintings are of a married couple, seemingly composed and tranquil, looking very respectable and content, like theirs is a perfect middle-aged marriage. I was struck by how convincing this veneer appeared to me, when the reverse could very well be true. It is very possible that the reality of the sort of life this couple led together is the exact opposite of what they seemed to be portraying in the painting. So I decided to recreate them and give them a more realistic sort of life, some other existence contrary to the one the painting seemed to be suggesting to me. The very serenity of the painting inspired me to give a different sort of interpretation to it. A hint of reality never hurts when it clashes with the romance in the painting.
