Tragedy

The National Gallery is collaborating with the London Film School on 'Transcriptions: LFS Shorts', an innovative new project which involves second term students producing short 3-4 minute films inspired by the Gallery’s collection as part of their course.

From the film-maker:

 

The painting is composed in dark colours giving an overall feeling of sadness and despair. The goal of my film was to recreate this mood. I found a location that had a similar setup to the bright beam of light coming in from the left of the painting. The man in the painting is reading a book, so I've used books and a library as a central point in my film.
