From the film-makers:
‘Van Gogh’s Chair’ is an unusual and enigmatic painting, as it is not a ‘self portrait’ in the conventional sense. I decided to see Van Gogh’s subject, the chair, as a character itself; I gave it a voice and built a story around that idea. What if objects got so attached to their owners that they would do anything for them? I thought it would be challenging for me to trigger sympathetic feelings for an object rather than for a person, as is the convention in most films. I borrowed the element of suicide from Van Gogh’s life and made the chair a key component in the attempted act. Rather than following Van Gogh’s colour palette as guidance for the visual quality of the film, I chose to incorporate elements of German Expressionism, since his work inspired the artists of that period as well as my own personal style.
