From the film-maker:

Compositionally, the painting bears a resemblance to the Steve McCurry's National Geographic photo of Sharbat Gula, which makes me wonder if the similarities were intentional. The pose is nearly the same, except the direction reversed. The striking silver shawl and the dual light sources in the painting immediately caught my eye, but the moment I wanted to recreate most was the sense of wonder at witnessing the return of a person, who by all rights should be dead, but yet is standing right before you. Savoldo captured this moment perfectly

A piece inspired by Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo, Mary Magdalene, about 1535-40
