From the film-maker:
The ambiguity of the painting is what inspired me – not knowing where or at what the woman’s gaze was fixed. The fact that the figure in this piece is deemed as a prostitute by art historians led me to think about a character working as a prostitute.
I tried to avoid creating a typical clichéd approach to the subject matter by infusing elements of both absurdity and romanticism in an attempt to create a dark fairytale about a single woman trying to support her family by any means possible.
A piece inspired by Italian, North, Woman at a Window, probably 1510-30
