From the film-maker:
Each time I went to the Gallery I simply ended up in front of this painting not knowing why. Yes, it is beautiful, but it wasn’t just the beauty of it. There is something about it that is very provocative. I eventually realised that the fact that Venus is looking at the watcher through the mirror is what captured my attention. It is very clever to have the person who is being watched watching the observer. I wanted to bring that idea to the present time and that’s why I thought of CCTV as a good device to express the essence of the story. The painting was very controversial because of the use of nudity (at that time in Spain nudity was a very rare theme in paintings). I thought I could capture some of that controversial aspect by using the CCTV system, because in a way CCTV is a device that leaves us all naked.
