What caught my attention in the first place was the sinister gaze of the collector. I was wondering why his expression was so grim and what he was staring at. My curiosity about the character increased when I saw the kind of objects he collected: in the background I noticed a playful sculpture of Venus, Mars and Cupid, which conventionally signify love and sensuality, and on the table in front of him a statue of Ceres, the ancient Roman goddess of fertility. I asked myself why such a vicious and cynical-looking elderly man like him was especially interested in objects with romantic and sensual connotations. Was he a pervert and was the thrill of possessing and having control over the images of beautiful young people the reason for his collecting fetish, or did his collecting habit express a vulnerable core and unfulfilled yearnings, maybe for receiving and giving love?
