From the film-maker:

This painting was the point of departure for a reflection about the body and the nude. Following John Berger's 'Ways of Seeing' discussion about the difference between nudity and nakedness, I noticed that in the National Gallery there were more people looking at paintings of female nudes than at paintings of male nudes. I imagined a situation where Degas' painting was the only authorised image of the body. In my film the nakedness of the man is real and direct, but avoided, while the nudity of the woman in the painting is represented, stylised and desired. I used the colours and details of the painting as a dramatic element to relate the man with the painting.
