From the film-maker:

I was inspired by the simplicity of the painting. The concept goes far deeper. Water is a life giver; it prevents wilting, ageing and death. In my movie the symbiotic relationship between the water and my character is evident. Sophie needs water to maintain her beauty and survive. A vain and pretentious superstar is getting ready for her performance. In true diva fashion, she is irritated and the heat from the sun is making her fractious. As her performance time draws near she realises that she's thirsty and needs to find water; with simple and modest life-giving properties it forms a striking contrast to Sophie's vanity and egocentric nature. As she sets out to find water she becomes dazed and confused, and when she finally reaches the water she consumes far more than she needs. Her greed results in her over-hydrating with unexpected consequences.
