From the film-maker:
I decided to transcribe Hendrick Avercamp’s painting ‘A Winter Scene with Skaters near a Castle’. I didn’t want to just pluck a character from the painting and animate them ice-skating. I wanted to develop the idea of creating a totally fictional fairytale place, as Avercamp did. I liked the feeling of being unbalanced and uncontrolled and wanted to depict this in my film, but not necessarily with someone wearing skates. I therefore kept the winter landscape and decided to use the frozen lake at the end of my film, but used a runaway cart as the driving force behind the madcap actions that take place.
