From the film-maker:
I was inspired by the painter’s choice of such a horrendous-looking character and I was excited by the idea of deciding how she would move. I tried to find equivalents for the painter’s use of exaggeration and caricature in my animation and enjoyed choreographing ridiculous and vulgar gestures for the character. In ‘Not A Pretty Picture’ the old lady is flirtatious and confident, bordering on delusional. The character of the boy, functioning as an audience surrogate, expresses our revulsion at her appearance which wounds her confidence. He finds out that while the grotesque old lady is ‘no oil painting’, she does have some fight in her.
