Initially drawn to its darkly humorous tone and fantastic theme, I wanted to explore the family dynamic that is suggested in the painting. What is to become of the starving family who are so neglected whilst the alchemist focuses on his futile pursuit? Perhaps we should not be so quick to judge the alchemist a fool. Surely he is simply trying to provide for his family as best he can. Surely his motives are pure?
