Take One Picture: An Exhibition of Work by Primary Schools

Inspired by Jan Molenaer's 'Two Boys and a Girl Making Music'

Using Jan Molenaer's painting 'Two Boys and a Girl Making Music' (1629) as their inspiration, primary schools across the UK produced work for the National Gallery's Take One Picture project.

The 'Take One Picture' exhibition at the National Gallery showcased the children's work. On display were hats, chairs, textiles, musical instruments, poems, paintings, collages and animated short films - all in response to Molenaer's painting.

Now in its 12th year, the Take One Picture project encourages pupils and teachers to learn together, setting their own lines of enquiry inspired by a painting.

Schools used Molenaer's painting as a stimulus to explore a broad range of subjects and key skills, including literacy, numeracy and ICT as well as art.

This year's project attracted 43,000 entries - enough exhibits to fill the whole of the National Gallery!
