Kitaj: Transcript of Audio Clip 1A

'Until our own day, there are about a dozen wonderful painters, who happen to be Jews. None of them, as far as I'm aware, want to be called Jewish artists. And I'm the only one who seems to not mind. And not only do I not mind, I even press the case to places where people don't want to go. And of course, some people hate me for it, some people are amused, my dear friends who are Jewish painters, like Auerbach and Freud and the others are amused and tolerant and affectionate with me about it. But you'd be surprised how many people don't want to know. Like so many Jews in history, including Jesus Christ himself, my turn of mind takes me away from the establishment, from the established order of things.'
