Frank Auerbach: Transcript of Audio Clip 1A

'Actually, to be quite honest, for the first twenty years I knew him, I didn't know that he was Jewish. And I think perhaps his consciousness of his Jewishness came with Sandra. But it's a project, and one of Kitaj's qualities I think, is that he does that thing which is so admirable, he bites off more then he can chew, he has huge projects, and goes for them. And he has made political comments, which in all these things are pretty outside the scope of the accepted view of what art is about. If he sees something uneasy and uncomfortable, he makes for it.'
