This display showcased work from the young people who took part in Modern Monuments at the National Gallery in October 2007. These young people had worked in groups with sculptor Al Johnson, examining the processes and decision making behind the construction and display of a sculptural monument.

The Modern Monuments project was developed by the National Gallery and is linked to the Mayor of London’s Fourth Plinth Programme. It forms part of an ongoing programme of practical workshops which aims to ensure inclusion for young people.

All the participants of Modern Monuments were attending regional Life Routes projects, which are run by a network of local programmes funded by Nokia and managed by the National Children’s Bureau (NCB).

This project was funded by Nokia and involved collaboration between the National Gallery and the National Children’s Bureau.
