 About the Scheme.

One-week Cultural Placements were first piloted by the National Gallery and Roehampton University during the academic year 2003/4. This partnership was set up in response to recommendations from the DCSF (Department for Children, Schools and Families) encouraging ITE (Initial Teacher Education) students, to gain teaching experience 'in settings other than schools', in addition to their school practice.

A need for enhancing opportunities for creative curriculum planning in teaching training courses was also identified by delegates at the Gallery's Annual Headteachers' Conference in 2003.

Between 2003 - 2008 over 300 Primary ITE students from Roehampton, Edgehill, Nottingham Trent and Oxford Brookes Universities have undertaken a one-week placement at the National Gallery, followed by partnership sessions at their regional galleries.

These placements are made possible through Strategic Commissioning DCMS/DCSF funding. Local partnerships with The Ashmolean, Oxford, The Walker Gallery, Liverpool and Nottingham Castle Museum have been built as a sustainable part of the programme.
