Tintoretto's 'The Origin of the Milky Way' was a focus for one student's scheme of work.

An interactive whiteboard was used with a 'spotlight' effect to highlight some of the visual symbols. The possible meanings of these symbols were then discussed.

Half of the painting was revealed and discussed, the children then drew what they thought the other half of the painting would look like.

This painting is an excellent starting point for the National Literacy Strategy text level activity 'write a story for your own myth'. The year 3 children learnt about the creation myth in Tintoretto's painting and then had a go at writing their own.

'How the Clouds were Created'

One day there was a god called Simbos who possessed special powers. The power of Simbos was his dance.

There was another god called the Power King and his special power was to take away your soul if you looked into his eyes.

These two gods were great enemies.

One day the two gods were in their homes thinking of a way to destroy each other.

Simbos entered a dancing competition and the Power King thought of an evil plan to destroy Simbos. As the Power King was cooking a poisonous dinner to kill Simbos a great amount of steam went up out of the chimney and started to form clouds.

From that day on there were big clouds in the blue sky.
