Three ITE students collaborated during their placement to devise a scheme of work based on Rubens’s painting of his home 'Het Steen'. All specialists in Early Years, they produced a list of questions to engage children under the age of five in looking closely at the image.

Key questions to engage Foundation-aged children:
  • What can you see in the picture?

  • Where can you see people in the picture? What are they doing?

  • Who are the people on the cart? Where do you think they are going?

  • Where do you think they have come from?

  • Who might live in the big house? Have they got any neighbours?

  • Do you think that the people in the cart know the people in the house?

  • What do you think the man in the front with the gun is doing? What position is he in? Why do you think the dog is there?

  • Can you see any water in the picture?

  • Can you see the sun?

  • What colours can you see? (Do they suggest a season?)

  • What sounds might you hear in this picture?

  • If you could go into this painting, where would you go and what would you do?
