Over 200 Year 7 pupils from Pimlico School
worked with journalist Victoria Neumark. Victoria
chose to focus on Massys’s painting of a ‘Grotesque
Old Woman’.
Victoria began by discussing newspapers and the
different types available before a group analysis
of the elements that make up a tabloid front page.
The painting was then introduced to the pupils,
as the image and basis for their own front pages
which they created during the masterclass. The pupils
discussed headlines, captions, and the type of text
they wanted to include in their story. A question
and answer interview was decided on, and Victoria
asked the pupils to come up with questions to put
to the ‘Grotesque Old Woman’.
