The Articulate project
is a response to the extension of the National Literacy Strategy
to secondary schools. In consultation with Literacy Advisers
from Brent School Improvement Service, Islington Council, Camden
Council and Hackney Technology and Learning Centre, the Gallery
has been working in partnership with schools to explore ways
in which the collection can be used to support the English Framework.
Schools involved in the project are:
Brentford School for Girls (TW8)
Longford Community School (TW14)
Hounslow Manor School (TW3)
Pimlico School (SW1)
St. Marylebone CE School (W1)
St. George Catholic School (W9)
Hackney Free and Parochial School (E9)
Skinners' School for Girls (E5)
St. Aloysius R.C. School (N6)
Stoke Newington School (N16)
St. Gregory's High School (HA3)
Woodfield Special School (NW9)
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School (N1)
John Kelly Girls' Technology College (NW2)
To encourage a sense of familiarity and ownership of the collection, and to enable each student to be given the same opportunity to work with a variety of writers, whole year groups from each school visit the Gallery three times over the course of their Key Stage 3 careers.
During the writers’ masterclasses, held at the Gallery,
students learn about professional ways of working and how to
communicate their ideas clearly. Back at school, with their
English teachers, students use these techniques to develop finished
pieces of work. This model has enabled the school students,
teachers, Gallery staff and the writers involved to gain new
perspectives on how the visual arts can be used to inspire creative
thinking, learning and, of course, writing.
