About the trail
This trail looks at seven pictures from the collection in order to explore the universal symbolism of light shared by different traditions. Each of the pictures suggests a different aspect of light: fire, sun, sight, lamps, spirit, knowledge and the modern world.
Who is the trail for?
It is aimed at adults, though families with children can enjoy discovering the paintings together.
Festival of Light
Light has a special significance during Diwali or the ‘Festival of Lights’ when the triumph of light over darkness is celebrated with lamps and fireworks.
Light is one of the oldest and most meaningful symbols, found in cultures and religions worldwide. This trail explores the parallels between the rich symbolism of light in Christian art and other traditions.
