The National Gallery is collaborating with Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication on 'Transcriptions: Sound'. This is an innovative new project which involves third-year students on the BA (Hons) Broadcasting (Sound Design) course producing a three-minute response to a painting of their choice in the Gallery's collection.

The creator on why this painting inspired her:

"Van Gogh made this painting while he was a patient in St-Rémy mental asylum, near Arles. My impression is that he started by creating a beautiful, still landscape, but as his illness progressed the mood turned stormy.

There is a sense of confusion: the wheat moves in all directions and the clouds are distorted. They hide the sun and it is becoming cold and windy. The dark cypress trees have the shape of fire – for me, this is the only warm aspect of the painting."
