The National Gallery is collaborating with Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication on 'Transcriptions: Sound'. This is an innovative new project which involves third-year students on the BA (Hons) Broadcasting (Sound Design) course producing a three-minute response to a painting of their choice in the Gallery's collection.

The creator on why this painting inspired him:

"My audio piece is a stark interpretation of the story of Lazarus. It begins deep in the bowels of the Underworld where trumpets sound frantically in the struggle to release Lazarus from death.

I have attempted to capture the intensity of being forced back to life after leaving this world. Bells triumphantly signal heaven’s victory.

The artist has painted the reaction of the crowd - not a single person is looking at Lazarus. Perhaps they are repelled by this abomination brought back from death? My work communicates Lazarus’ isolation, shock and suffering."
